Norton AntiVirus is designed to run seamlessly in the background to keep your computer safe from online threats. On occasion, Norton may cause your computer to run slower or even lock up after you install the program. Both new installations and upgrade installations can cause the problem, but the exact reason varies from computer to computer.
Anytime you install multiple anti-virus programs, you run the risk of one or both programs causing problems to your computer. If you already have an anti-virus program installed, uninstall it before installing Norton. Trying to install both can cause your computer to lock up after Norton has finished installing. The only way to repair the problem is to uninstall both and reinstall Norton. You can have additional protection, such as a firewall, but full anti-virus suites often conflict with each other.
If you run other programs while installing Norton or your computer shuts down unexpectedly during the installation, the Norton installation may be corrupted. While Norton may appear to have been successfully installed, your computer will lock up or freeze when Norton tries to start. If ending all running Norton processes fixes the problem, you likely have a bad installation.
Uninstall Norton using the Norton Removal Tool, as the standard uninstaller may be corrupted as well. Restart your computer, close all open programs and re-install Norton.
Every version of Norton is designed to run on specific operating systems with minimum hardware requirements. Compare Norton's system requirements to your computer. If your computer doesn't meet all of the minimum requirements, Norton can lock up your computer. When running Norton with an incompatible system, your computer isn't powerful enough to handle all of Norton's essential processes.
If you have a trial version or older version of Norton installed, uninstall it completely before installing a new version. This only applies if you are not upgrading from your current version. If older files are left behind on your system, they can conflict with the new installation, resulting in your computer locking up.
