McAfee Total Protection — $44.99 (save $75)

Like it or not, your Windows 10 is highly vulnerable to all kinds of pernicious attacks — and hackers are just getting more and more creative with creeping into your personal computer. Denial of service, SQL injections, cross-site scripting, and password attacks are just a few of the threats you’ll have to contend with.
And what happens if your information gets hacked? Just about anything under the sun. A Javelin Strategy & Research study found that in 2019 total identity theft losses cost consumers $16.9 billion. Combine that with password or document theft, and you get the picture. Having your computer hacked can get ugly fast.
Windows 10 does come with its own default antivirus program called Windows Defender. Unfortunately, comparative studies have shown that Windows Defender doesn’t always make the cut. Several of its features are more likely to fall short against other anti-virus software options.
The good news? There are a host of great options out there. Many of them don’t just protect your Windows 10 with antivirus software, but also enhance your PC’s performance, work on multiple platforms such as Android or iOS, and even provide cybersecurity training.
Here are some of the best options to help you guard your personal information, maintain the overall health of your computer, and keep yourself safe from outside threats.
AVG Ultimate has everything and the kitchen sink. On top of providing antivirus software for Windows 10, it also provides overall computer tune ups and cleanups. What does that entail? “Pro cleaner” tools for both desktop and mobile devices.
The product will stretch the life of your PC and speed it up, including a faster boot time and longer lasting battery. It will also help you regain storage space (which, let’s face it, we could all use with our millions of phone pictures).
If you are worried about privacy, AVG Ultimate also includes a VPN with 256 bit AES encryption that can be installed on Windows, Macs, iOS and Android. AVG Ultimate covers up to 10 devices, which makes it great for a big family (or maybe for you and your roommates). Of course, there’s also webcam and ransomware protection, real-time web updates, an enhanced firewall, a file shredder, and blockers for unsafe email attachments and links.
Basically, if you want more than just antivirus protection and overall enhancement of your computer performance, this is one of the ideal products out there.
As Amazon reviewer Bruce A. Grieme put it:
“Great proven product, great retail price and easy help from AVG tech support to help with install if you need it! I will definitely purchase again from this supplier! Also, timely shipping is another plus!”
For its near rock-bottom pricing, McAfee Total Protection provides a solid array of antivirus offerings — though with somewhat moderate reviews. One thing it’s lacking: cloud backup for documents. If you want that, you’ll have to spring for McAffee LiveSafe instead.
Unlike some of its competitors, McAffee offers free technical support by phone, chat, or online. They also have parental controls that block certain search results or websites for your kids, and a password manager that will streamline the daily hassle of dealing with multiple passwords.
Their award-winning antivirus software will also protect your computer from spyware, ransomware, and blocking malware. Using it will help prevent spam messages, phishing attempts, and potentially unwanted programs that could compromise your device’s security.
Although it doesn’t have some of the bells and whistles of its competitors, it’s likely the best value for your money.
Amazon reviewer Jim writes:
“The download version is simple to install and works immediately. I purchased 5 device coverage and found that it transfer easily to my and my spouses IOS devices. I had used McAfee PC protection before and was totally satisfied with the software. I am confident that it will once again protect my computer from any malware/viruses today.”
Kaspersky Total Security is one of the most comprehensive products in the lineup, covering everything from syncing and securing passwords to children’s safety tools and multiple platform usage with one license.
With this software, you’ll be able to shop safely and prevent suspicious activity around online payments, shopping, and banking. The secure connection features allows you to encrypt your data, and receive wifi alerts when you’re at risk. And unlike some of its competitor’s offerings, Kaspersky also includes a master password manager, VPN, and secure cloud file backups all-in-one.
Overall, this product really covers the gamut, including protection from ransomware. As a final note, there is a whiff of scandal around this product. The U.S. has cast suspicion that Kaspersky might be used as Russian spyware, and brought its CEO to testify before congress. That said, nothing has been proven — and many of its loyal users say the accusations are unfounded.
Amazon reviewer Jonathan writes:
“I’ve always loved Kaspersky, super easy-to-use interface and software, very protective, constantly and consistently updates as well as scans computer. Detects numerous threats and blocks them. I’ve never had such an impressive computer security product before. YOU NEED THIS!”
Another Amazon reviewer Brian Reid writes:
“I have used Kaspersky of some sort for more than 15 years and have never been let down. It makes sense to me that if something works, don’t change it. I currently run this on all my PCs and tablets. It’s easy to install by following the prompts and then easy to adjust any settings (scan schedules, protection for email, etc.). Updates are automatic and frequent without interrupting any work on my PCs. Overall, do the homework and see for yourself how reliable Kaspersky is compared to other AV software and you will probably come right back to this… The digital download makes it easy to install and run without keeping up with an activation number (after setting up and account of course). I highly recommend this to all home or business users.”
Bitdefender provides all the basics you’d want in Windows 10 Antivirus protection — multi-layer ransomware protection, webcam and microphone protection, and parental advisories. The ransomware protection prevents encryption and infections, meaning you won’t have to worry about losing data, money, or important documents.
But of all the products listed, Bitdefender specializes in software to protect and monitor your children’s usage. For example, Bitdefender allows you to track your children’s online activities, and even receive notifications if your child has left a designated safe area. The software also blocks disturbing phone calls or mobile messages, and allows children to check in as “safe”.
This product works on five different devices. Bitdefender will also notify you if apps try to use your webcam and block unauthorized access. For people worried about their own privacy, that can be especially advantageous.
Amazon reviewer Matthew writes:
“I purchased this a while back because I needed some new antivirus software for my PC. I researched a lot and bitdefender came up as the best and most affordable one around. I purchased five devices so after I made my Bitdefender account I installed it on my PC, phone, and other devices in the house. Since then i have fallen in love with Bitdefender! I really appreciate the many protection features like ransomware protection. For me it runs light and doesn’t bog down my system. I would recommend this product to anyone.”
This software is designed to shield you from cyber criminals stealing financial information. It also helps protect you from scammers while you shop, chat, and bank online.
Norton 360 Deluxe is a #1 best seller in antivirus software, and for good reason. The tried and true product has won multiple awards against its competition. As a subscription product, you won’t have to a deal with a physical copy delivered to you. That makes it easier to access regular updates, helping you ward away the latest computer viruses.
Additionally, this software works on multiple platforms — so if you want it for your Windows 10 in addition to your Android or iOS phone, you can use it for all of them, and manage it from one portal. This version now includes a VPN, ransomware protection and 50GB cloud storage. One downside: if you really want extra protection, you’ll have to buy Norton 360 with LifeLock Select. 360 Deluxe covers more than the Standard version, but the LifeLock Select version also adds a layer of protection for identity theft, includes a Privacy Monitor and alerts you to new SSN and credit applications.
The subscription will last you 12 months. After that, you’ll have to renew for the next year. Overall, this is a solid choice for people who are looking for comprehensive protection for Windows 10.
As Amazon reviewer Sasha Q. put it:
“I am so happy with Norton. They really run a very, very thorough full scan. The most thorough out of all the other products mentioned above. Their software does not slow down my system at all. This product was easy to install, and runs like a dream. I highly recommend this product for complete computer security.”
Another Amazon reviewer Between You and Me writes:
“I’ve been using Norton products for at least 20 years, and I’ve always purchased the comprehensive suite because virus protection alone is just not enough for safe browsing online, no matter what anyone tells you. My computers have never had viruses, malware, Trojans, or any other problems. Norton checks your downloads for problems, as well as your emails, and this software includes a firewall, which is like building a virtual wall around your computer… I know that there are free antivirus and internet security programs out there. But the expense of having a professional try to restore my computer, if it would even be possible, is just not worth taking the chance on a free product. Norton backs up their product with a guarantee. More importantly, Norton backs up their product with years of experience and constantly monitors the Web for new problems, of which there are thousands… I find Norton products easy to set up, to renew, and to understand the control panel of options. I also like that Norton can do quick scans of my hard drive, or intensive scans that scan every item. I am all in favor of saving money. But my computer security will never be an area in which I cut costs. And buying it on Amazon is the best place for the best price.”
Of all the products reviewed, Webroot received the most positive feedback — over 1,000 customers gave it five stars on Amazon. Webroot offers a wide range of features, from malware detection to computer tune-ups.
Take advantage of the software by blocking and detecting viruses, malware, and ransomware, and stopping phishing and identity theft. You’ll also receive warnings about dangerous links or sites before you click on them. Like some of the other products listed, you’ll also get automatic updates on the latest software.
Best of all, you don’t just have to use this product for Windows 10. Webroot also works on mobile and tablets with up to five devices. And unlike some similarly priced products, you’ll also get cloud storage backup thrown into the whole package.
Though a handful of customers have complained about poor support, the majority of those who are happy with the product says it works swimmingly well. As Amazon reviewer Madison put it:
“This operates seamlessly in the background. Non-intrusive. The absolute best customer service for anti-virus I’ve ever experienced. This was a renewal, so CD took me to internet to renew. Very fast and easy. Program includes permanent erase, which is a nice feature, and also works friendly with other anti-virus installed. Unlike some anti-virus programs that operate in the cloud, this one allows you to scan your files or computer without having to be connected to the Internet, even though overall the anti-virus works from the cloud.”
Another Amazon reviewer, DPOB, writes:
“Good program with very, very low drain on computing resources. Excellent for older, mid to lower end computers, due to it’s small footprint. Because of its cloud-based architecture, it is always current and updated. After the initial scan, most scans take a minute or two, running entirely in the background. A real relief after using resource hog competitor’s security suites!”
PC Matic is one of the pricier products on the market, but it does offer some features that its competitors don’t; primarily, cyber security training from KnowBe4. Overall, this product is focused on basic protection and streamlining your PC. For example, it helps run a weekly background check to remove junk files so your PC doesn’t get bogged down and slow.
It is lacking some of the other features that its pricier counterparts have, such as cloud storage, password managers, and data encryption. However, there’s still the bread and butter. PC Matic offers Windows 10 antivirus protection that blocks spyware, ransomware, viruses, adware, and zero-day attacks.
It also has an automated whitelist feature to keep your computer safer. Their ad and popup-blocking tools also help keep you from clicking on malicious ads that could steal your sensitive information.
Amazon reviewer Yukimo Richmond writes:
“This was seriously easy, folks. I’m not joking. I am tech-savvy. I work in a highly-technical industry where I operate advanced sensing and acquisition systems. I used to take care of my family’s laptops myself. Not any more. PC Matic does the job better than I ever did. I enthusiastically recommend PC Matic. It’s half the price of the lowest competitor, and the protection is more comprehensive than any of them.”
Another Amazon reviewer John Croxton writes:
“I am now a believer, My computer had so many viruses, and bugs. It was an older model and it froze constantly, Malware kept taking over and not letting me get on line 80% of the time, my privacy was exposed and Hackers kept getting in. I nearly gave up. But I heard about PC Pit stop on TV and thought, fine, this is the last $50,00 I will ever spend on this computer. Man, I couldn’t even get into my own emails have the time. But I gritted my teeth and took a long deep breath and downloaded PC Pit Stop…This is no Joke, I sat back as it scanned my computer, it just took over.. Killing everything it encountered, quarantining everything in disarray.. I was witnessing a battle of epic proportions, It started repairing my registers, and correcting errors, downloading drivers… Then within a few minutes I was asked to restart my computer, and I did.. and it was a moment of shock and awe.. As if I had just bought a new computer it started humming along, lightning fast speed, and running like a Mercedes. I kid you not, this was bar far the best investment I have ever made.. It saved me hundreds of dollars and I got my sanity back.”
Rather than overwhelm its users with an overabundance of settings options, F-Secure SAFE stays out of weeds with a streamlined interface and easy to use set of features. Unlike some competitors, you have most of the same features when you install on Windows, Mac, and Android devices, with a limited version on iOS.
The software shields against viruses and spyware, secures your connection for online banking, and protects important files against ransomware. Parental controls come in the form of limiting screen time and website blocking for computers as well as phones and tablets. It also comes with a finder tool that will help locate mobile devices.
F-Secure SAFE does lack some features you might expect from a security suite. If you want a VPN, a password manager, and Wi-Fi protection, you will have to upgrade to the TOTAL version, which still is missing a file shredder and firewall. Endless features aren’t for everybody, and if you value ease of use then this is a product to consider.
