The breach is among at least four online attacks in our area in the last year and a half, and experts say it is becoming a major concern.
The breach is among at least four online attacks in our area in the last year and a half, and experts say it is becoming a major concern.
Plaza Radiology, also known as Chattanooga Imaging, provides medical imaging services with offices in Chattanooga, Cleveland, and Dalton.
In October, Hospital administrators learned of a breach.
This breach is among three other online attacks that have occurred in the last year, and experts say it is becoming a major concern.
The founder and Chief Security Officer at Conversant Group, John Anthony Smith says cyber crime has become a lucrative business for hackers, and says institutions like hospitals, schools, and businesses have become an easy target.
Smith says more than 4-thousand attacks happen everyday that is one attack every 14-seconds, and it is getting worse.
“Most Americans go about their daily lives completely unaware that we are in a war,” Smith said. “It is not a war that is being fought with humans on a battlefield it is a war on the internet. We are fighting in zeros and ones.”
Cyber actors will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. They are attacking schools, businesses, and hospitals.
“They are a good target, namely because they store so much sensitive data,” he said.
Over the last year, C-H-I Memorial, Chattanooga Heart Institute, and Chatt State reported cyber security attacks impacting thousands of patients and students.
And now, Plaza Radiology is reporting a cybersecurity incident.
A report revealed that a few files were hacked. Although no fradulent activity has been reported, administrators have hired a cybersecurity firm and will send out letters to everyone who may have been affected.
Smith says cyber attackers are hard to detect.
“It does take a significant forensic analysis, and commonly during those forensic analyses, the data they need actually to pinpoint what data was accessed is gone,” he said.
Administrators at the Plaza are analyzing the type of data compromised.
Smith says users do have an option if their information is stolen by hackers.
“You need credit protection services; I would argue that most individuals today, especially in the context of how many breaches are occurring and how frequently they’re occurring,” he said.
He says the defense of Health Care systems, schools, and businesses relies on their I-T department.
He says hackers are becoming more sophisticated by the day and we should too.
“These types of threat,” he added. ” This type of digital warfare will only get worse, and unfortunately, America continues to digitize our lives, and the more we make digital the more our risks get amplified, and that’s not going to change.”
Hospital administrators at Chattanooga Imaging says they will offer free credit monitoring and identity protection to anyone affected.
Plaza recognizes that members may have questions. For more information, call 423-553-1234 between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday (excluding U.S. national holidays).
A spokesperson told Local 3 News that CHI Memorial’s parent company, CommonSpirit Health, is managing an IT issue, which impacts local facilities.
While the Institute says the unauthorized third party didn’t access data directly from their Electronic Medical Records, they might have obtained some patient-related details, such as names, addresses, SSNs, and health information
Chattanooga State says they are offering a year of complimentary credit monitoring to the individuals whose personal information was compromised.
