YARMOUTH (WGME) — Have you ever gotten an invoice in your email for something you thought you hadn't bought?
That's been happening to Mainers in Yarmouth and police are issuing a scam warning.
Police say scammers are sending fake invoices to Mainers’ email accounts that appear to be from the software company Norton Antivirus.
Included is a phone number that when called, reaches the scammer who promises a refund.
Then, they claim to have accidentally over-refunded the customer by thousands of dollars, demanding the customer make it right by sending gift cards or wire transfers to cover the difference.
Yarmouth police say no legitimate business will ever demand payments in the form of gift cards.
They say in some cases the scammer will even attempt to take control of the victim’s computer, using programs like AnyDesk to make the transfers themselves.
Police say do not allow any third parties to access your computer.
